Checking your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors is something that should be part of your ongoing home maintenance, regardless of whether you own a stove or not. However, when you’re actively burning fuels in the home, there’s more reason that ever to increase the frequency of this safety check. Government Fire Safety regulations recommends that you test your alarms at least monthly. If you have a battery-operated alarm, you should change the power source once a year, or for a longer life, invest in a 10-year alarm. It’s advised that after the 10 years you should purchase a whole new alarm system. To clean the device, gently use the soft brush attachment of your vacuum to remove any dust from the sensors.
So, your stove is all set and ready to welcome in the winter with its first burn, but what happens if your fuel is not up to scratch? Unseasoned wood can have moisture content of up to 90%, which makes for a poor burn and will not provide the heat output your stove was designed to emit. If you’ve followed the process and have an impressive stack of seasoned firewood, it’s always best to avoid burning it straight from an outside store as the logs will have some surface moisture, even if they’re full seasoned. It’s a good idea to bring in small bundles of your pre-cut, seasoned logs in the morning so that they are fully dry and ready for burning in the evening.
