Can A Wood Burning Stove Be Eco-Friendly? What is Ecodesign?
Most people have heard the term “Ecodesign” being used in reference to wood burning stoves over the last few months, but many are still unclear as to exactly what it involves, how it works and when it will come into effect.
“Ecodesign” is a new set of requirements that will influence the way a lot of energy related products are manufactured. Among these new rules, wood-burning stoves will have to meet a certain level of regulatory criteria in order to meet the new legislation set out by the European Union.
In a similar vein to the current DEFRA requirements for wood burning stoves used in Smoke Controlled Areas, the new Ecodesign stoves will be vital in improving air quality.
It will be illegal to manufacture and sell new stoves after 1st January 2022 that do not comply with the Ecodesign requirements. However, stoves that are already in the supply chain (manufacturers’, distributors’, retailers’ warehouses or retailers’ showrooms) can be sold after this date.
If you have bought or installed a non-Ecodesign Ready stove just prior to the cut-off date, they are not banned from being used. It simply means that non-Ecodesign stoves will be increasingly difficult to purchase beyond January 2022.
What are the benefits an Ecodesign Ready stove?
As implied by the name, Ecodesign is about all stove manufacturers producing stoves that are not only kinder to the environment, but also actually benefits us humans too.
To comply with Ecodesign, every stove must:
- Significantly reduce its 2.5 micron particulate emissions (aka 'PM2.5') to levels significantly lower than that of not just an open fire, but also more efficient wood stoves produced a decade ago.
- Restrict its emissions of 'Organic Gaseous Compounds' ('OGC'), Carbon Monoxide ('CO') and Nitrogen Oxides ('Nox').
- Provide evidence of a stove's compliance through independent testing.
The end result of this is that stoves that comply must be capable of cleaner combustion by burning off excess, unwanted gases and particulates before they can reach the atmosphere.
