Stove Fuels

Which fuel is right for you?

Solid Fuel Stoves

Wood logs or Solid Smokeless fuel, the choice is yours.

Wood Burners

Our wood burning stoves are Ecodesign Ready meaning that they will burn wood more efficiently and with lower emissions than an open fire.

Burning wood log fuel requires air flow above the fuel, this makes it possible to reburn the gases from wood for extra performance whilst producing the least amount particulate emissions. This does make wood-only stove unsuitable to burn solid smokeless fuels (MSF) in a stove designated as being wood-only, or in a multi-fuel stove designated stove that does not have some form of grate or solid fuel burning kit.

Wood is safe to burn on 'Defra Exempt' appliances in a designated UK Smoke Control Area.

  • Fuel & Heat Output: Wood burners are solely fuelled with properly seasoned or kiln-dried logs of usually no more than 100mm (4 inches) in diameter, modern wood burners deliver impressive efficiency and significantly reduced emissions compared to older models. Depending upon the design of the stove, wood burners have typical output of more than 4kW which is more than adequate for most homes, especially modern well-insulated properties. Wood is a natural renewable fuel, you can save on the cost of fuel by sourcing seasoned logs locally.

  • Operation & Burn Time: Whilst wood burners may need a little skill to get them running (click here to see how!) The ritual of lighting of them is actually part of the enjoyment of their ownership.  Using our popular  Ecoburn 5 wood burning stove as a guide, this stove would normally consume just under 1kg of seasoned hardwood to produce 1kW of heat to achieve its nominal rated output of 4.9kW. The burn rate of the stove can be controlled with air controls underneath the stove door. Those controls will get hot, but we supply gauntlets for your safety with every stove! .

  • Installation: A specialist stove installer is recommended, you can find your nearest approved Arada stove installer here. They can visit your property and conduct a survey to help you decide upon your installation requirements, for example, if you don't already have a stove or fireplace your property will require a level, non-combustible floor and a constructional hearth and some flue equipment to safely vent exhaust gases outside of your home.

Solid Smokeless Fuel / MSF Stoves

Solid smokeless fuels are a manufactured mineral-based product having the appearance of uniform ovoid or egg-shaped blocks. These are the alternative to coal ever since it was been banned for use in home heating. Known by different names such 'smokeless fuel' or 'smokeless coal', here we tend to use the label 'Manufactured Smokeless Fuel' (MSF).

MSFs have a much higher carbon content and lower moisture levels making them lighter and more efficient when compared to wood fuel . The higher heat energy potential of MSF makes it an ideal fuel source for our boiler stoves since they are designed to heat water for your central heating system as well as produce residual radiant heat for the room they are installed in.

Burning MSF fuel requires air flow from underneath the fuel, this makes it unsuitable to burn MSF in a stove designated as being wood-only, or in a multi-fuel stove designated stove that does not have some form of grate or solid fuel burning kit.

MSF fuel is safe to burn in our stoves installed in a designated UK Smoke Control Area.

  • Fuel & Heat Output:   MSF has higher energy output than wood, typically 5 to 9kWh per kg. Solid smokeless fuel provides a long, steady and concentrated burn in comparison to wood logs. The higher energy output makes it well -suited to stoves that need to work harder for longer periods or at high heat output levels.

  • Operation & Burn Time: Burn time with MSF is much longer than with wood logs, so it requires less attention when lit, making it better suited for long periods of daily heating than wood in that sense. MSF can take more effort get going, since a small fire of kindling is required initially to get the fire going from cold. Once up and running Simple to use by filling and lighting the 1-litre burner tray, delivering 4–5 hours of flame. The burn rate and flame size can be adjusted using the included closure plate tool and hot glove.

  • Installation: As with wood burners, employing the work of an approved professional heating installer is best for a safe and optimal installation, and a flue system for safely venting exhaust gases externally is required as is a constructional hearth. Note that due to their increased weight, our boiler stoves cannot be installed on a 12mm hearth.

Multi-fuel Stoves

Not a fuel-type, just different and convenient way to use solid fuels. A multi-fuel stove will burn wood logs or solid smokeless fuels (MSF).

When you consider the comparative benefits of either burning wood logs or MSF, you can actually have the best of both worlds - the lower cost of wood logs and the ambience that burning it gives to the room (great for spring and early autumn!) or the consistent, higher output but with less flame-fussing attention that comes with burning MSF (great for dark, wet winter nights!)

The majority of our stoves are actually already able to handle either solid fuel types. Some multi-fuel stove models will require an optional solid fuel kit to guarantee optimal burning of solid fuels.

Bioethanol

The renewable liquid fuel source

Hamlet Solution 5 bioethanol stove

Bioethanol Stoves

  • Fuel & Heat Output: Powered by renewable, eco-friendly liquid bioethanol, these stoves burn with near 100% efficiency, outputting around 2.5kW of heat with minimal water vapour and carbon dioxide emissions.

  • Operation & Burn Time: Simple to use by filling and lighting the 1-litre burner tray, delivering 4–5 hours of flame. The burn rate and flame size can be adjusted using the included closure plate tool and hot glove.

  • Installation: No chimney or flue is required, though dummy flues can be added for aesthetics. They require a level, non-combustible floor and securing brackets, but no constructional hearth.
